The Workings of the Culper Ring

This exhibit featuressections describing changes in how the Culper Spy Ring worked, and a few of their great accomplishments.

Changing Approaches

Washington and Tallmadge were alwayslooking for better intelligence and a faster route with the Culper network, even when the Culpers were working well.

Washington suggested the Culpers try another route several times, and the addition of Townsend reflected both the fears of Woodhull and the efforts to improve the quality of intelligence.

The French Fleet Warning

These documents relate to the Culpers' fastest dispatch, which historians speculate involved a warning about the British plans to attack the French Fleet, and possibly also Arnold's treason.

Invisible Ink and Blanks

This section displays some of the evidence of the Culpers use of invisible ink and transmission of messages using blank sheets of paper within a package of paper.
